Class Description:  Take your garment-making skills to the next level with this artistic and adventurous follow-up to our Boxy Top Foundation Pattern class! Learn how to make the Foundation Pattern, designed by Thread + Sprout, into a nature-inspired scene, using the Thread +Sprout Nature Top Pattern. Use different color fabric to make the boxy top to look like hills, flowing mist, the layers of the ocean, or whatever else you have in mind.

Led by experienced sewist and instructor Catherine Lanyon, you’ll learn how to modify an existing pattern, add seam allowances with confidence, work with curves, and thoughtfully place color and shape to create a wearable landscape. Along the way, you’ll refine essential skills like accurate measuring, tracing, cutting, and overlock finishing.

By the end of class, you’ll have a uniquely expressive short-sleeve top that reflects your own style — plus the knowledge to apply these design methods to future garments and other sewing patterns. The techniques you’ll learn can grow with you as you explore scrappy patchwork, textile art, embroidery embellishment, or your own scenic compositions.

This course is the second of a series with our beginner “Boxy Top Foundation Pattern” course; if you’ve taken the first course, you are all set to come back for course two.

*If you are joining us for the first time, you will need to purchase the Foundation Top pattern from Thread + Sprout, and print the directions and the pattern sheets for yourself (we can help!). The Foundation Pattern includes sizes XXS - 5X (fits busts/chests that are ~31-66”). You do not need to have taken the Boxy Top Foundation Pattern course with us to join in! While sewing a basic boxy top is fairly beginner-friendly, sewing curved lines can be tricky.

This class will run with 3+ participants.

PLEASE NOTE: While no garment experience is required, if you have never used a sewing machine before and are feeling nervous or stressed about using one for the first time, please consider taking our Sewing Machine Confidence Builder prior to this class, or get in touch for a private one-on-one lesson.
