Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

Hoop & Bee is located within Eastworks, a converted textile mill building in the heart of Easthampton, MA. The address for Eastworks is 116 Pleasant St, Easthampton, MA 01027. We are located in Suite 209 on the second floor.

We are on the East side of the building. The best entrance to use to reach our studio is the Main Entrance via the glass door beneath the marquee. The entrance is across the parking lot directly behind the PVTA bus stop.

Upon entering beneath the marquee, the blue elevator is immediately to your left, and the entrance to the stairs to your right. Take the stairs or elevator to the second floor and at the end of the entrance hallway, turn left. Suite 209 is about 100 ft down on your right.

If you enter at the West Entrance, which is at the smaller parking lot, you will be on the opposite side of the building from the studio. Use the stairs immediately to the right of Local Burger’s new location, or the red elevator further in to go to the second floor. Turn right out of the elevator and Suite 209 will be about 700 ft down on the right.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes. A $50 deposit is required for longarm quilting and a $100 deposit is required for all custom quilts. This will apply towards your final total. You may pay via cash, credit card, debit card, Apple pay, or check while dropping your quilt off. The remainder of the balance will be due at pickup.

What is your turnaround time?

Our turnaround time could be anywhere between 6 days to 6 weeks, based on a number of factors and any upcoming gift-giving holidays. Quality quilting takes time–we recommend that you plan ahead!

If you have an event coming up with a hard due date, let us know in advance and we will work to reasonably accommodate. If your project needs to get done “as soon as humanly possible”, a rush fee will move you within the top 3 spots of our queue.

I live out of state, can I mail you my quilt to longarm?

Yes. Please fill out our mail-in form prior to mailing in your quilt. Once we receive your submission, we will try to respond within 2 business days, to either schedule a 30m Zoom consultation if you would like to talk before mailing your quilt, or via email to confirm the details, including your pantograph design, scheduling details, and outline our initial estimates so you will know exactly what to expect. Then you may mail it to

Be sure to wrap everything in plastic, in case the box gets wet or damaged. It is also advised to write your address on the plastic as well, just in case the box becomes too damaged to continue its transit. We will let you know once we receive your quilt - and immediately let you know if anything looks like an issue, needs to be adjusted, or needs attention. We will send you an invoice for your initial $50 deposit and it will go into our work queue. Once it is in the studio, it will be handled only by staff with the utmost care and love until it is complete and ready to send back. We will send you a final invoice, minus your deposit, and once that invoice is paid, we will send it back via USPS Priority Mail, and provide you the tracking number.

Can I give you more than one quilt top at a time?

Yes. Bring or send as many as you have. Our work queue is structured per quilt, not per maker, so we can either let you know when each is done or when they are all done.

Will you use your longarm to just baste the sandwich for me so I can hand quilt?

Yes. Basting a quilt is a physically demanding process, often involving being on our hands and knees, bending, crawling, or stooping, and using small or fussy pins. Sometimes our physical space, our mobility, or our body’s limitations will not allow us to easily or effectively perform this step of the process, and sometimes we just plain don’t want to. This service is quoted per project, so get in touch for pricing and details.

Will you hand-tie?

Yes. French knots don’t scare us. Please get in touch to inquire for pricing and timeline.

I don’t know what stitch pattern i want, can you help me?

Yes. This is exactly what our design consultation is for. During your consultation, we will work together to determine which stitch pattern will work best for you and your quilt. You will be able to select from books of designs or we can even make one that you love. We have some of our computerized edge-to-edge design options for you to preview in our online gallery, each of which can be made larger or smaller, upside-down or backwards - plus even more options if none of those suit! While pricing is dependent on stitch density, we do not list which are low density or high density, as this changes with how large or small the pantograph is made.

We can also do custom hand-guided quilting if you would like the most customized experience.

I told you to do whatever you wanted and i don’t like what you did, can i get a refund?

No. Our free design consultation that we offer during every drop off or mail in is designed for us to set expectations and to mutually agree upon design, layout, placement, and thread colors. You are absolutely welcome to decline a consultation and instead just tell us to do whatever we want–and you might probably even earn a discount by giving us free creative rein and we will be very excited for your project–but if you do decide to give us full creative control you are giving up any input into the design choices and you will get what you get. No refunds will ever be given on work that has been mutually agreed upon in writing and then completed by us.

The only event in which we will issue a refund is if a machine breaks down and prevents us from finishing your quilt before your gifting date and we must return it to you to bring elsewhere. In this event, we will promptly return your deposit to you.

I saw a quilt i love on Pinterest, can you make it for me?

Yes — but... quilt commissions might cost more than you anticipate. Granted it will be in your chosen colors, materials, size, and in your personal aesthetic, and it will last you a lifetime, but it won’t be comparable to just buying a quilt from a store.

Strictly as an example of how the costs are figured, let’s imagine you ask us to make a quilt for you using AGF’s gorgeous Topiary Quilt pattern. You saw it, you loved it, you can’t live without it! We don’t blame you. This to make this quilt we would need:

  • About 11 yards total of OEKO-TEX certified cotton fabric for quilt top and binding mailed to the studio from your favorite Etsy fabric shop @ 12.99/yd ($142.89 + tax)

  • 8 yards of fabric for the backing @ 12.99/yd ($103.92 + tax)

  • 1 spool of coordinating Aurifil thread ($15 + tax)

  • 1 package of Quilter’s Dream Select Natural Cotton Queen batting ($29.99 + tax)

  • This pattern is a little fussy so let’s roughly assume (to be on the safe side) 12hrs of skilled labor for cutting and sewing. And let's mercifully not include the cost of tools, machines, rotary blades, etc., or any other upcharge…. (12 * 25 = $300)

  • Then, let’s say you also want it longarmed ((84 * 84) * .025 = $176.40)

  • With a handsewn binding (294*.32 = $94.08)

Quick math and carry the 2, and we’re looking at about, oh, just about $880 for a queen size quilt, when we’re all said and done. Dang

And that’s not even that much when you’re talking custom quilts.

So why is this so different from what you might pay for a store bought quilt? Those quilts will obviously be very different in terms of materials and quality and longevity, but this is actually a much bigger and more serious discussion that occurs in all artisan communities and goes back to ethical supply chains, valuation of creative work, and modern slavery. It’s heavy stuff.

If a commissioned quilt isn’t within your current budget, consider signing up for one of our sewing classes this Spring or asking about private lessons in the meantime–we’re just as open to teaching you how to sew as we are to sewing for you.

Can you teach me to sew?

Yes. Hoop & Bee’s owner, Jessa, has been quilting for over 30 years. During that time, she’s also been teaching quilting and sewing in-person throughout the Pioneer Valley and surrounding area  (plus or minus a shutdown due to a global pandemic). Jessa is currently a staff instructor at the Hill Institute.

We will offer a regular schedule of various skills workshops, quilt-alongs, and beginners classes in our Eastworks studio in Spring 2024.

If you are an instructor looking for a teaching space OR represent a studio or maker-space looking for an event instructor or workshop guide, please use our contact form to get in touch about logistics, pricing, and scheduling to best meet your needs.

Can we pray over the quilt as it is quilted or have an energy practitioner present during sewing?

Yes. This is the only circumstance Hoop & Bee will allow guests present in the studio while the work is being performed. We will make arrangements ahead of time so we can allow a dedicated time and set mutual expectations.

Can we collab?

Yes. We love collaborations and partnerships that are mutually beneficial. We believe that fellow artists in our or any medium are never competition and we instead focus on how artists can all work together to uplift and be more inclusive and intentional in our creative communities. Let’s chat about it.

Can you make me a quilt coat?

Love those, but no. What we could do is sew a patchwork panel for you, or quilt large pieces of fabric or yardage for you to sew into wearable pieces. Drop us a line.

Can you hem my pants or reupholster my couch?

Hard No. Tailoring and upholstering are unique artisan trades. They are not our trades.

Do you do any commercial production?

Yes. If you need yardage custom quilted for your commercial production, we can design a proprietary stitch pattern and sew as many yards as you need at wholesale prices. Availability for commercial production over 6 yards will be limited during the fall and winter during the gifting season, so get in touch for scheduling details.
