Orphan Block Rescue Day
Event Length: 7 hours
Event Cost: FREE!!
Are Materials Included? YES! Materials are provided by Hoop & Bee for this event, but all donations are welcome
Event Description:Hoop & Bee's Orphan Block Rescue Society rescues hundreds of orphaned quilting blocks every year. These unfinished blocks might be leftovers from classes, experiments, UFOs never meant to be finished, legacy quilts, or other generous donations. It is no exaggeration to say we have literally HUNDREDS — the amount of blocks we have has far outstripped the time we have to work on them — and they are all just waiting to become something amazing!
So we're opening up an entire day to our amazing Hoop & Bee community to get these blocks finished into twin, full, or queen size quilt tops, to be finished and donated to worthy charities throughout the Pioneer Valley.
This is a big, joyful, collaborative effort, and there's a role for everyone. We'll need people to sort through blocks and find what plays well together, folks with an eye for color and layout to arrange them on the design walls, sewists to piece them together, and people who love a good pressing session to keep everything flat and ready for the next step. If you're someone who finds coordinating fabrics from a scrap bin genuinely satisfying, ohhhh, do we have a job for you. Every skill level of contribution matters, and the whole thing works because everyone brings something different!
The entire event runs from 10am–5pm, and we've broken it into two sign-up blocks so you can join us for the part of the day that works for you. Nobody is expected to stay the whole time. You can sign up for the morning, the afternoon, or both. Everything in the classroom will be at your disposal: sewing machines, rulers, irons, design walls, and whatever we've got in the scrap bins.
If you have orphan blocks of your own gathering dust at home, or fabric that could work as sashing, backing, or additional blocks, bringing them along would be absolutely wonderful. These quilts are made entirely from what our community has to offer!
PLEASE NOTE: This event is not a class. While there is some skill-sharing as part of its nature, it is meant for confident quilters and sewists, either hand sewing or machine sewing. If you have never used a sewing machine before or are feeling nervous about using one, please consider taking our Sewing Machine Confidence Builder prior to this event.
