Class Description: The Spring Studio Series at Hoop & Bee is designed for makers who want time, space, and support to work on projects they care about. Each Track offers guided studio time within a structured, supportive environment, allowing you to bring your own ideas, works-in-progress, or patterns while receiving instruction and feedback from our instructors along the way.
If you’ve ever felt unsure where to begin, gotten stuck mid-project, wondered why something isn’t working, or felt ready to explore a more personal artistic voice in your quilting, The Improv Track is designed for you. Taught by Vermont-based artist Rae Heller, this 6-week series is for quilters, sewists, artists, or makers who want to move beyond following patterns and start making confident, intentional, intuitive and artistic decisions in their work.
In The Improv Track, you bring an idea, a project-in-progress, or even a source of inspiration, and work on it within a guided, structured, supportive environment throughout the series. Rather than step-by-step instruction, each week Rae offers a clear focus area–color, composition, critique, and momentum–paired with individualized support and feedback.
This series is about learning how to decide: how to choose colors with intention, how to build visual cohesion, how to recognize when a piece needs pushing (or restraint), and how to trust your instincts without feeling lost. While a fully finished project is not the primary goal, participants will experience meaningful, tangible progress on work they care about, along with renewed momentum and methods you’ll continue to use long after the series ends.
This class will only run with 5+ participants as our instructor must travel a significant distance to join us.
Some prior sewing experience is helpful, but no improvisational quilting experience is required. If you have never used a sewing machine before or are feeling nervous about using one, please consider taking our Sewing Machine Confidence Builder prior to this class or get in touch for a private one-on-one lesson.
