Embroidery for Quilters
Class Length: 4 hours
Class Cost: $68
Are Materials Included? No, a supply list will be provided before the first session.
Class Description: Embroidery and quilting have a long, shared history. Just look at Victorian crazy quilts! Those gloriously irregular patchworks of silk, velvet, and satin were covered in elaborate hand embroidery, turning a functional object into something really more like a diary. The stitching wasn't decorative afterthought; it was part of the story the quilt was telling.
In this workshop, Diane Wespiser explores what that relationship looks like through a modern lens. She'll share examples of quilts where embroidery has been used not as embellishment, but as an integral design element - stitches that add texture, movement, and a distinctly human touch to finished work.
The first half of the workshop is skills-focused: you'll learn and practice 6–10 foundational embroidery stitches, with hands-on time to get comfortable before moving on. In the second half, you'll put those stitches to work on a quilt of your own. Bring a finished quilt you've been wanting to add hand-stitching to, or a mini quilt (anywhere from 12x12 to 20x20 inches) ready to be embellished. These could be finished quilts or just quilt tops. Not sure what to bring, or don't have anything ready? We'll have something waiting for you to practice with.
You'll leave with a new set of hand-stitching skills and a fresh way of thinking about what a finished quilt can look like.
This class will run with 3+ participants.
No prior experience with hand sewing is required.
