Class Description: In this two-session skill-building workshop you’ll learn foundational hand appliqué techniques while exploring how small, intentional choices around color, repetition, and composition can grow into expressive, personal work.
This workshop introduces multiple hand appliqué stitches, methods, and approaches, based on the "Double Color shape technique" developed by Amanda Nadig. You’ll learn how to build on this method, adapting it to suit different ideas, materials, and goals — and make it entirely your own!
Using organic appliqué shapes, you’ll build quilt blocks and begin composing them into a larger piece. Throughout both sessions, Rae provides hands-on guidance, individual feedback, and design-focused coaching around color relationships, spacing, repetition, and placement. You’ll be encouraged to explore multiple options while also learning how to recognize which choices best support the piece you’re trying to make, including when to adjust an approach and how to adapt the technique to suit your own goals, materials, and aesthetic instincts.
This workshop offers clear guidance, thoughtful instruction, and space to explore ideas as they develop. You’ll leave with strong technical foundations, a growing appliqué composition, and new ways of thinking about color and design that extend far beyond this class.
This class will only run with 5+ participants as our instructor must travel a significant distance to join us.
Some prior sewing experience is helpful, but no previous hand appliqué experience is required.
