Improv Quilting Sampler
Class Length: 6 classes, 2hrs/ea
Class Cost: $125
Are Materials Included? While some materials will be provided by the instructor, students are encouraged to bring mixed materials they already own such as worn out clothing or garments, towels, old blankets, or other inherited fabric such as silk, knit, wool, flannel, denim, etc., to use to create a deeply personal, sustainable piece.
Class Description: Taught by guest instructor Sarah King, this six-week workshop introduces improvisational quilting through the structure of a sampler. You’ll explore core improv techniques like log cabins, wonky stars, strip piecing, curved seams, and more, reinterpreting each block with a sense of freedom, play, and curiosity, using fabrics that carry meaning.
More than a skill-building course, this class is an invitation to expand and experiment. Drawing inspiration from traditions like boro stitching, the work of the Gee’s Bend quilters, and 19th-century embroidery samplers, you’ll be guided through every step of the quilting process - from piecing to quilting to binding - while learning to listen to and trust your instincts, and respond to the materials in front of you.
Improvisational quilting is about more than breaking the rules. It’s about learning to see beauty in what’s already there, and shaping it with your own voice. You’ll leave class with a small finished quilt (or a table runner or wall hanging) and a deeper connection to your creative process.
This class will run with 3+ participants.
PLEASE NOTE: While no experience is necessary, if you have never used a sewing machine before and are feeling nervous or stressed about using one for the first time, please consider taking our Sewing Machine Confidence Builder prior to this class, or get in touch for a private one-on-one lesson.
